COMMUNITY PROJECTS
The Haribans Charity Trust is a dynamic, non-profit organisation
taking on the responsibility of bringing about social development
to the community of KwaZulu – Natal.
We envisage a
community of skilled workers becoming independent and less
reliant on charity. We wish to make Verulam and its surrounding
areas a workforce that builds itself economically with
much needed training and projects to assist the underprivileged
and those from indigent backgrounds.
Of the many projects
developed to assist the community of Verulam is the recently
launched CAP (Community AIDS Programme) accompanied by
MIP
(Matric Intervention Programme) and the OM HARI SABHA
TEMPLE. We also have embarked on SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
viz. LITERACY PROGRAMME and SEWING CLASSES (ABET).
OM HARI SABHA TEMPLE
In the early 1990’s the Trust was involved in the
purchase of two prime sites in Everest Heights, Verulam.
The first site was earmarked for the building of a Hindu
temple to service the community of Everest Heights and surrounding
areas, whilst the second site was reserved for the development
of a Community hall/training centre. The rationale being
to assist people from all walks of life to become active
members of society.
To date the Unicity has passed the plans for the temple
and the project has begun.
CAP (COMMUNITY AIDS PROGRAMME)
The Haribans Charity Trust has embarked on a social development
programme that embraces the concept of uplifting the community
and social development. The lack of community awareness and
assistance was the catalyst for the Trust to establish a
community HIV/AIDS awareness programme, which will be known
as CAP (Community Aids Project). The Trust has forged links
with the Methodist Church and other organizations to assist
in establishing CAP.
The Trust is in a process of looking for volunteers to become
facilitators and caregivers. We have extended our search
to all that are interested in the youth, adult and worker
category of volunteers, who will be able to assist and
care for a large number of diverse age groups. It is our
goal and objective to bring together all role players to
begin the fight against ignorance and resistance, offer
services, training and assistance without compensation
to the community at large. We envision that by bringing
all stakeholders together we can assist in the fight against
HIV/AIDS, the pandemic which is beginning to erode and
destroy our society.

Dr. Zweli Mkhize (MEC for Health) launched
the HIV/AIDS Project in March 2006. Present were Deputy
Mayor Logie Naidoo, Mr. W. Haribans (Founder member
of the Trust) and Cllr. Prem Iyer (Donor)
MIP (MATRIC INTERVENTION PROGRAMME)
The Haribans Charity Trust embarked on a social development
programme with a view to uplifting the community. The programme
aims to educate and provide skills for the unemployed on
an ongoing basis. We will be looking for voluntary trainers,
facilitators and educators to become part of this education
programme. Our aim is to assist children from poor background
in subjects like mathematics, physical science and accounting.
Education has always been a priority of the Haribans Charity
Trust. Currently a Matric Intervention Programme is underway.
A class of 20 learners is being tutored in mathematics on
Saturday from 08:00 to 10:00. As soon as funding is available,
tutors will be assigned for the other subjects.
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES
1. COMPUTER LEARNERSHIP
The HCT will be embarking on a Computer Learning Centre.
We hope to assist unemployed individuals to become computer
literate. These courses will adhere to minimum requirements
or standards and be certificated. All training is to be offered
free of charge to the destitute and needy.
2. SEWING CLASSES (ABET)
The next project is the raining of machinists for the clothing
industry. We hope to produce individuals to become competent
in the industry so as to be able to be employed or set up
their own enterprises. The training will equip individuals
from cutting to the end product.
